Steve Hargis, Head Coach
From 1999 to 2008, Hargis served as the Head Coach for the USJWNT Development Camp and from 2004 to 2008, Hargis also served as the U.S. Junior Women's National Team Head Coach. In 2006, under the direction of Coach Hargis, the US 8+ raced to a silver medal finish at the Junior World Championships in Amsterdam. In 2007, they won a bronze medal in Beijing and in 2008, they won a gold medal in Lizn-Ottensheim, Austria - the first gold in this event in the 25 year history of the US Women's participation in Junior Worlds, defeating the defending Junior World Champion, Romania. That same year, Coach Hargis was presented with the United States Olympic Committee's Development Coach of the Year Award for his contributions to US Rowing.
During the same timeframe, Coach Hargis served as the Director of Rowing and Head Women's Coach at the US Coast Guard Academy. Under his direction, the women's team made five out of six NCAA DIII appearances, won two NEWMAC conference championships and produced three DIII First Boat All-Americans. he was honored as the NEWMAC Coach of the Year in both 2003 and 2007, as well as the DIII National Coach of the Year in 2003.
Graham Willoughby, Assistant Coach, Men's 8+

Graham Willoughby is in his first year with the USJNT as the 2012 Jr Worlds Development Team Head Coach. Coach Willoughby started his rowing career at Marin Rowing Association as a Junior in 1995 at the age of 16. He started coaching Juniors in 2000 while in college as an assistant at Capital Crew in Sacramento, California, where after 2 years he was named Varsity Men's coach. In 2005, upon returning to Marin County, Graham began coaching the Novice Men at Marin. After 3 very successful years, Coach Willoughby took over the Varsity Men in 2008. Coach Willoughby's teams have won 5 medals at the Youth National Championships, multiple Southwest Regional titles and most recently won the Head of the Charles in the Youth 8 event, setting the course record. When Willoughby isn't coaching, he acts as the Boathouse Manager and Boatman for Marin Rowing Association, one of the premier rowing clubs in the country. Willoughby also competes at the Masters level, having won back to back Masters World Championships in the 2- as well in the 8+ at the San Diego Crew Classic in 2008. Coach Willoughby recently married and resides with his wife and two dogs in Farifax, Ca.
Eric Houston, Assistant Coach, Men's 4
Coach Houston is in his first year with the US Junior Men's Team, although Houston has been a major force in junior rowing for three decades. Coach Houston has been the head coach at Kent School since 1995 and has coached at Kent since 1984. Under the leadership of Coach Houston, Kent has medaled six times at the NEIRA's, bringing home two golds, one in conjunction with an undefeated season in 2001 and the last in 2006. Coach Houston has traveled to the Henley Royal Regatta three times (1999, 2001, & 2006) as well as Belgium and England (2004) to race his crews. Prior to taking on the lead role at Kent, Coach Houston was Hart Perry's asistant coach for 11 years. Houston's own rowing career started in the spring of 1977 while attending Kent. During his senior year Coach Houston was a member of the Kent boat that won a gold medal at both NEIRA’s and Stotesbury which was then the National Championship regatta. Coach Houston also rowed at Trinity College. He was the captain of the first Frosh heavyweight boat that had an undefeated regular season and finished third at the Dad Vail’s. He later rowed in the varsity heavyweight boat for three years and captained the Trinity Crew during his senior season.

Nick Haley, Team Manager
Haley has coached on both the women's and men's side of the Junior National Team since 1999. He is currently the head coach at the Rose City Rowing Club in Portland Oregon. Prior to RCRC founding in 2004, Haley was the head coach at Oregon Rowing Unlimited. Haley rowed and coxed in high school in London, England and coxed at Georgetown University. He is in his second year as team manager for the World Championships and ensures that things run smoothly for the athletes and the coaches at the World Championships.

Guenter Beutter, Junior National Team Sculling Coach

In 1988, Coach Beutter was recruited as a coach for the German National Team. From 1989 to 1997, Beutter coached both men and women in sculling and sweep boats, taking his athletes to five world championships earning four gold and one silver medal. After spending time in Germany, Beutter headed to the states. In 2007, he coached the USRowing senior W 2x at the world championships in Munich, the race that qualified them for the 2008 Olympics. In 2008, Coach Beutter started working with US Junior Team boats, the W2x, being his first. From 2009 – 2010, the US Junior National team W 4x was under the guidance of Coach Beutter and improved their record from the C-Final in 2008 to a sixth place finish in the A-Final in 2010.
In 2009, Beutter coached the US Lightweight Men’s 1x and the Lightweight Women’s 4x at U23 World Championships, bringing home a silver medal with the LW 4x. In the summer of 2010, Coach Beutter coached the US U23 LW 4x at the Worlds in Belarus and the US LM 2x and LM 4x, all GMS Rowing Center Athletes at the Senior World Championships in New Zealand. Victoria Burke, one of his athletes, earned the silver medal in the LW 4x at the 2010 World Championships in New Zealand. For the last two years, Coach Beutter has resided at the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, CT where his crews have won numerous gold, silver and Bronze medals at prestigious races such as the Head of the Charles, Elite, Club and Youth Nationals.

Colan Groom, Assistant Coach, Sculling
Coach Groom is in his first year as the head of the men's scullin selection. Coach Groom rowed for nearly a cedace on the US National Team as a lightweight and heavyweight. Sfter retiring from competitive racing in 2006, he began to coach Elite and Junior athletes. Conal is excited to play a role in continuing to develop the US Junior Sculling proram in conjunction with Guenter Beutter and Steve Hargis.
In Grooms first year coaching, Conal coached the Women's Sr. Ltwt Quad to the World Championships while also coaching the Women's Jr 1x to the first medal for the US, a bronze. Two years later, Conal coached the second Women's 1x to medal at the Jr Worlds bringing home yet another bronze. In the last six year, Conal's athletes have represented the United States on the Olympic, Senior, U23 and Junior Worlds Teams. His junior crews have won 8 medals, with five being gold during this time frame.
In August of 2010, after having worked as a director and head coach at clubs in Seattle, Conal an dhis business partner opened their own facility, the Seattle Rowing Center. This venture is dedicated to producing athletes who win national and international rowing championships on the Junior, U23, Senior and Olympic levels. Seattle Rwoing Center has a focus on small boat development.
