Junior Development Camp Itinerary

2012

DATES

Athletes will arrive in Pittsburgh on June 11th and the Development Camp will run from June 11th through USRowing Club Nationals on Cooper River Lake in Camden, NJ from July 11-15th. There will be opportunities for athletes to gain racing experience. Athletes will be in Pittsburgh for just over three weeks before traveling to Indiana as a team.

TRAINING FACILITIES

Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) has two boathouses that are both located on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, PA. The boathouses are very close to each other allowing our members to use both easily. We have miles of rowable water and access to Pittsburgh’s three rivers from our docks on the Allegheny River. The water on the rivers in the summer is consistently good. TRRA has its own programs, but also rents rack space to about 10 high schools and three colleges. Both boathouses have boat storage bays as well as full service indoor facilities. The indoor facilities include weight rooms, locker rooms, classrooms, kitchen facilities and erg rooms. The Development Camp will be training from the Millvale Boathouse which is six years old and includes indoor rowing tanks.

HOUSING & FOOD

During the duration of their stay athletes will be housed in the McGinnis Center of Camp Guyasuta, a local Boy Scout camp just under 5 miles from the Millvale Training facility. Camp Guyasuta is located on 178 acres just outside of the city of Pittsburgh. Its grounds are complete with basketball courts, high and low ropes courses, and a swimming pool (available for use at a small charge). All meals will be served in the main conference room that is adjacent to the dormitories. The McGinnis website is:

The dormitories are set up on two floors with several bathroom and shower facilities on each. Several of the coaching staff will be living with the athletes to provide supervision at all times. Each athlete will be sharing their room with one or possibly two other individuals. The entire McGinnis Center has wireless internet available, as well as one on-site computer that athletes will be able to access. The main conference room will double as a cafeteria and recreation area. The room is equipped with an overhead projector and viewing screen, 24 hour access to fountain drinks, seating area, and television. The conference room was used for many lectures, core workouts and other activities in addition to the meals in 2009. Athletes spend their down time watching movies on the projector, playing video games, or resting in their rooms or camp facilities. The facility also has a large picnic area only a few yards from the main entrance. All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be served in the main conference room area.

NON-ROWING ACTIVITIES

Pittsburgh has a lot more to offer than just its beautiful rivers. The team will have a few trips to have some “down” time away from rowing during the four weeks. Some possible activities would include going to the movies, the waterfront, a Pirates baseball game, watching fireworks, a tour of Mt. Washington, a tour of the Universities as well as attending the many science, art and history centers and museums Pittsburgh has. These activities will be decided upon as a group. Pocket money will be needed to participate in these activities.
